M.H.Pavethra
Genetic Counselor
Pavethra is a genetic counselor, her motivation towards genetic counseling started from her under graduation. Pavethra believes that genetic counseling is essential and that people from any socioeconomic status should have access to the best. She is a keen believer in providing genetic counseling at an affordable cost. Ms Pavethra completed her graduation in genetic engineering. She has volunteered for “rare disease day” and actively involved herself in any opportunities that would come up in genetic counseling. She has done a project on “the molecular genetics of Orphan diseases” under Dr. G. Kumarmanickavel from the Center for Medical Genetics. She also did a fellowship in MYGENEDx. Following her graduation, she worked as a Cancer Genetic Counselor at the Madras Cancer Care Foundation (MCCF). She has completed an internship at the University of Wisconsin in Genetic Counseling. She also had the opportunity to get trained by Tata Memorial Hospital’s Cancer Genetics unit. She believes that apart from genetic and counseling skills a good genetic counselor should also have knowledge of Psychology. This made her pursue theoretical and practical courses in Psychology. Pavethra has participated in various conferences to help improve genetic knowledge and was one of the panelists at Premarital and Prenatal genetic screening: from the eyes of genetics and psychology which was organized by BioSoc-DTU. She was recently recognised by the Vel’s Group of Institutions as a successful alumnus and was awarded for her success and sincerity towards Genetic Counseling. Pavethra always keeps herself updated on the new prospectus and discoveries in the field of genetics and always ponders about how best she can help her patients. She maintains a good work-life balance and makes sure to attend to her family.
