Dr. L. Manikandan, is a leading Surgical Oncologist with years of experience in doing both routine and complex oncological surgeries. He started his journey as a doctor at the prestigious Government Medical College in Calicut, Kerala which at the time served the six Northern Districts of Kerala. The years spent in crowded wards bestowed on him a wealth of clinical knowledge and a sense of service to humanity which laid the foundation for his holistic approach to Cancer patients with emphasis on compassionate, ethical and transparent practice.
After he graduated with his basic medical degree, he practiced for a year in the rural areas of Kerala providing yeoman service to the local population. He followed his passion for surgery by working hard and securing admission once again in his alma mater Government Medical College, Calicut in the Department of General Surgery. Here he spent three years fine tuning his Surgical skills and gained exposure to various benign and malignant surgical illnesses. After completing his surgical training he rejoined the department and worked as a Casualty Medical Officer in charge of the busy Surgical Casualty of Government Medical College, Calicut for a year.
During this time he identified his interest in managing Cancer patients who are often a neglected subset of Surgical Patients. He worked towards his goal and gained admission by merit in the prestigious King George’s Medical University, one of the oldest Medical Institutions in the country.
The Department of Surgical Oncology in King George’s Medical University is one of the busiest Oncology Department’s in the country performing over 5000 Cancer Surgery procedures every year covering all parts of the body. During his time here, Dr. Manikandan served the Department with distinction and passed with flying colours. For his achievements he was bestowed the prestigious Prof. N.C. Mishra Memorial Gold Medal for Excellence in Surgical Oncology. He represented the Department in various International Forums like Annual SSO meet in Chicago, USA, National Comprehensive Cancer Network Symposium in Florida, USA and International Gynecological Cancer Society Meet in Kyoto, Japan. He underwent training in the Hepatobiliary Service of the world’s leading Cancer Hospital, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, New York under their experienced faculty. He was also awarded the Chinese Society for Clinical Oncology Travelling Fellowship award for his presentation in the SSO meet held in Chicago. This enabled his research work in Ovarian Cancer to be featured at the annual Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology meet in Xiamen, China.
Dr. Manikandan continued his training journey in the Gastric Cancer Department of Cancer Institute Hospital of Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research in Tokyo, Japan gaining invaluable knowledge about best practices in treating stomach cancer.
He applied the knowledge he gained through sixteen years of rigorous training to be the best at performing Cancer Surgery and set up his practice in Chennai. He has always kept patient well being at the centre of his practice and balanced treatment outcome with patient comfort and good quality of life.
