May 31st is observed as “World No Tobacco Day” to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and to encourage people to quit tobacco use. It was first introduced by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1987 to highlight the health risks associated with tobacco use and to promote effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.
Tobacco use is a major cause of cancer, heart disease, and other non-communicable diseases, and quitting tobacco is one of the best ways to improve health outcomes and reduce the risk of developing these diseases.
